Travelling by train to Portugal is relatively easy but does take time. Those who take the time will discover a country which ranges from soft, green landscapes in the north to more arid terrain in the south. With historic cities, sandy beaches, tasty cuisine and reasonable prices, Portugal is a great country to discover by rail.
If you are working out the best things to do in Portugal, we always recommend taking time to explore Lisbon, surely one of Europe's most appealing capital cities, before heading on to other historic cities. Three of our favourites are Guimaraes, Évora and Porto - all easily reached by direct Intercity trains from Lisbon, and each having a stunning city centre. All three feature on UNESCO's World Heritage List. For those more inclined to rural diversions, take the train which runs east from Porto up the Douro Valley to discover Portugal's premier wine region.
Most long-distance rail services in Portugal require seat reservations, to be booked in advance. These are not yet available on our site and apps but we can book your rail trip to Portugal, which inevitably concludes with a cross-border leg from Spain where our coverage is excellent. Our system will handle bookings for most direct trains from Spain to Portugal. These include the direct night train to Lisbon from Madrid, Ávila, Burgos, Irun, Medina del Campo, San Sebastián, Valladolid and Vitoria. Buying train tickets in Portugal is very straightforward when you get there.
You can also book the new cross-border Celta service, which gives a very useful twice-daily link from Vigo (on the Galician coast of north-west Spain) to Porto, taking just 2 hrs 20 mins.

Portugal's three main airports are in Lisbon, Porto and Faro, all of which are easily connected by train. Getting from Porto airport to its city centre by train is particularly easy, as its airport has its own train station. You need to buy tickets for this locally. There is a bus to the main train stations from Lisbon and Faro airports, which can also be bought locally.
